Background and Context

On June 28, 2025, Budapest witnessed its most significant Pride march, with around 100,000 participants defying a government-imposed ban. This event, marking the 30th anniversary of Budapest Pride, served as a substantial act of defiance against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's administration. The government, citing "child protection," amended assembly laws to prohibit public events promoting deviations from the gender identity corresponding to the sex at birth, effectively banning the Pride march. Despite these restrictions, the march saw strong international support, highlighting growing domestic opposition to Orbán’s 15-year rule.
