BOJ’s inflation rethink keeps another rate rise in play after an October pause [English/Español]

The decision at stake

If you hold yen, Japanese bonds or assets exposed to Japan’s import costs, the important question is not simply whether the Bank of Japan pauses in October.

It is whether the central bank raises its inflation assessment while leaving the policy rate unchanged.

Reuters reported that the BOJ may lift its inflation forecast and stand pat at its 29-30 October meeting, only one meeting after raising the rate to 1.25% in September.

That combination would separate the timing of the next move from the direction of policy.

A pause would spare borrowers an immediate increase in financing costs, but a higher inflation forecast would preserve the case for further tightening rather than signal that normalisation has ended.

The policy and market backdrop

Four sources expected the BOJ to leave the rate unchanged at the October meeting.

Its July projections put core consumer inflation at 2.5% for fiscal 2026 and 2.4% for fiscal 2027.

The fiscal-2027 estimate could be revised slightly higher because crude-oil prices have risen again.

The bank was also expected to retain its view that financial conditions remained accommodative and to keep its focus on inflation risks.

Corporate expectations are not accelerating across every horizon.

The September Tankan survey put average all-enterprise inflation expectations at 2.6% one year ahead, 2.6% three years ahead and 2.5% five years ahead.

The one-year reading had eased from 2.7% in June.

That gives the BOJ room to wait for more evidence even as imported costs press on its forecast.

The separate market snapshot shows USD/JPY at 158.129, down 0.25% over one day but up 0.42% over one month.

The 10-year US Treasury yield stood at 5.146%, with the yield series rising 0.57% over one day and falling 0.85% over one week.

The S&P 500 closed at 7,757 after a 0.58% daily gain and three consecutive advances.

These figures define the wider financial setting; they do not establish that the BOJ report caused those moves.

The structural reading

Japan’s constraint runs through two linked import channels: crude oil sets part of the external bill, while the yen determines how forcefully that cost reaches domestic buyers.

When oil becomes dearer and the currency is weak, the same imported barrel can exert more pressure on household and corporate prices.

The BOJ must then decide whether it is seeing a temporary cost pass-through or inflation sustained by wages and domestic demand.

That distinction matters beyond Japan.

The policy rate influences the yen, Japanese government bond yields, borrowing conditions and global fixed-income flows.

Yet stronger demand for AI-related goods, together with associated exports and capital spending, offsets softer domestic consumption.

The BOJ therefore has a policy buffer: it can hold at 1.25% while keeping another increase available if underlying inflation persists.

The evidence supports a clear decision.

Treat an October pause as a choice about timing, not a reversal of the tightening path, provided the inflation forecast is raised and accommodative financial conditions remain part of the BOJ’s assessment.

What to watch next

The decisive document is the 30 October policy statement and Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices, followed by Governor Kazuo Ueda’s press conference and the full Outlook report on 2 November.

Focus on the fiscal-2027 core-inflation number, the description of underlying inflation and the language on financial conditions.

Wage settlements, subsequent Tankan expectations, USD/JPY, Japanese government bond yields and oil-price pass-through will show whether imported pressure is becoming persistent domestic inflation.

A fiscal-2027 forecast left at 2.4% would change this interpretation by showing that the reported upgrade did not materialise.

Strategic Reading from Sun Tzu

Sun Tzu wrote: ——The wise person's calculation always mixes advantage with harm.

A rate pause offers the advantage of avoiding an immediate squeeze on borrowers, while the higher inflation assessment carries the harm of leaving households, companies and bondholders exposed to another increase later.

The principle is to judge both effects within the same position rather than trade on the pause alone.

Therefore, re-measure your Japanese exposure against the combined constraint of imported inflation, yen transmission and domestic persistence before changing that position.

Indicadores a seguir
